Update (4th March 2022) Subsequent to our statement below, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) has acted to move The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2022 outside Russia as a fully virtual event. The full IMU statement is available on the IMU website.

The IMS remains concerned for the safety of our colleagues at this time of war in Ukraine.

Statement on ICM22 (22-25th February 2022):

The Irish Mathematical Society (IMS) is deeply troubled by the developing situation in Ukraine and Russia and its implications for their scientific communities whom we count among our colleagues.

The IMS is Ireland's adhering organisation of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) which is hosting the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Saint Petersburg in July 2022. The IMS regrets that this valuable opportunity for international cooperation, collaboration and engagement will be disrupted.

The IMS can no longer support the holding of the ICM in Russia. The IMS will not be sending delegates to the ICM and will not be funding travel grants for mathematicians to attend. Those mathematicians who have already been awarded these grants will be contacted.

The Irish Mathematical Society aims to further Mathematics and Mathematical research in Ireland. Its membership is international, but it mainly represents mathematicians in Universities and other third level institutes in Ireland.

The Society publishes its bulletin twice per year (July and December approximately).

The society promotes ethical and professional conduct in mathematics.

Conference support

The Society provides financial assistance to the cost of running conferences and meetings of a mathematical nature, within its means.

Fergus Gaines Cup

The Fergus Gaines Cup is awarded annually by the Society to the best performer in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad (IrMO).
